It is better to choose long tail keywords which tends to give conversions rather than competitive keywords.

Always go for long tail keywords first in the beginning of your campaign, but just because they are long tail does not mean they are not competitive keywords.  On page SEO should reflect according to your chosen keywords, in the tags, Title, Alt, Meta, H1, and H2 tags, etc which will help you rank well for those keywords initially when used in accordance with ethical off page SEO.

Good interesting content.  Internal linking but don't look spammy.  Make sure you have fresh content consistently.  Blog works great for this purpose.

Hope this helps!

Yes I do agree that long tail keywords is preferable and the only reason behind is low competition. But again there is risk of lower search volume on that specific keywords. So before finalizing keywords a lot of research is to be done.

Always go for long term key phrases first in the beginning of your strategy, but just because they are long-tail does not mean they are not very competitive key phrases.  On web page SEO should replicate according to the best key phrases, in the meta tags, Subject, Alt, Meta, H1, and H2 meta tags, etc which will help you list well for those key phrases at first when used according to honest off web page SEO.
