There are two main things to have a successful and profitable campaign.

The first is to target the proper people in your PPC campaign. It starts with the keywords. You need to be specific. I've seen someone using “puppies” and “dog” as their keyword to sell an electronic fence, thinking if they search these words, they have a dog and so may want such a fence. No, you need to target when they are actually need that product and qualify themselves using the keywords relevant to your product. Your ad also has to be attractive. If you just say “yes, we have electronic fences for dogs”, fewer will click, leading to higher click costs, lower positioning and less times your ads will show. Give them a reason to click your ad. What's in it for them? What's the benefit of buying your product?

The second part is the landing page. It needs to convince them to buy. A lot of people assume the ad is going to do that, that once it's clicked, the job is done. No, the ad showed the carrot, the pre-sell, now you have to close the sale. Think of it this way: if the page was blank, even with a great ad, are you going to make a sale? No. So create a great sales page, convince them to take out their wallet for you and not the competitor. And bring appropriate clicks to it, not the home page where you're making people search. They just did a search in Google, don't make them search on your site, few will do that.

You need to look at both sides, the ads and the sales page.
