SEMrush allows you to quickly find your advertising competitors based on the keywords you plan to target. Then you can click on your competitors to see what other keywords they target their ads toward and the ad copy they use.

People make things way too complicated in my opinion for a lot of things.

You don't need keyword tools. If you can't come up with keywords for your product, you don't know it very well. If you sell square wooden widgets, that's what it is, that's the keyword. I'm in the business, I help others with their campaigns, and I don't spend money on these services.

The OP mentions competitors. You can't control what they do. You just need to be better than them. Yes, know who your competitors are, but don't obsess over what they do. Google is the big player and they have data that can help you see over time what competitors MAY be doing such as higher budget, maybe higher bids, maybe have increased their quality.

The OP also mentions researching bids. What is the goal? In most cases, to get as many clicks as possible which will lead to more sales, all else being equal. This usually means you want to be at the top (maximum clicks). So what bid will get you there given your current quality score? But remember that the whole system is in flux. You control your campaign but you can't control what the other players are doing. Concentrate more on improving your ad quality rather than researching and changing bids.

Moat Ad Search is the largest digital-ad search engine. It's a great tool for analyzing your competitors' ad creative. Simply type in a brand and review the ads that they've used in the past.
