A canonical issue is a situation when a single website is presented and can be reached via different links (http://www.website.com,http://website.com, https://www.website.com etc.).
The crawlers will see these links as a different website and t will be penalized for duplicate content.
The solution is to redirect all these links to one single URL.

A canonical issue arises once 301 redirects are not properly in place. This means that your web site will be accessed by search engines from many different URLs. This means that search engines will then probably index your web site under different URLs, which means that it'll appear as if a web site of duplicated content.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.
