The XML site-map protocol is specifically designed for spiders. In the simplest form,an XML site-map is behind the scene XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL.
An HTML site-map is an actual page on a site containing links to the website's most important pages.Any site with anything approaching complex navigation should consider an HTML sitemap for visitors.A visitor might refer to an HTML site-map to help them navigate when they can't find a specific page easily.

Making an Xml sitemap helps you to let google know about all the pages present in your site so it may even help in indexing those pages which are not indexed.

An HTML site map, sometimes written "sitemap," is a summary of every page within a website accessible to users on a website.

HTML site maps can be organized in a variety of ways, but the most common sitemaps are arranged by topic. A properly designed website should allow visitors to navigate the entire site without the use of a site map. An HTML site map dose offers and alternative method for navigating pages.

HTML site maps are also useful for search engine crawlers because it can assist in identifying the URLs and the data under each section of the website.

There are two types of sitemaps in general namely -
1. HTML (Hyper Text Makeup Language) sitemap
2. XML (Extensible Makeup Language) sitemap.

A HTML Sitemap is created for your visitors, indexing bot such as Googlebot might have a better chance to crawl your first-time-missed links again since all the files are well put together in your sitemap page.

A XML Sitemap allows webmasters to inform search engines about URLs in your blog/website for easy indexing. XML sitemap is created for search engines but not for humans. Submitting a XML sitemap to search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing will not only help your blog/website being indexing quickly and efficiently but also increase your blog/website’s visibilities in search engines as well.

HTML site map is mainly for the for ease of navigation, they are easy to understand. They are mainly for humans and not for the search engine.

XML sitemap are for the search engines. They are not understandable for a normal internet user.

An HTML sitemap allows site visitors to easily navigate a website. It is a bulleted outline text version of the site navigation. The anchor text displayed in the outline is linked to the page it references. Site visitors can go to the Sitemap to locate a topic they are unable to find by searching the site or navigating through the site menus.

This Sitemap can also be created in XML format and submitted to search engines so they can crawl the website in a more effective manner. Using the Sitemap, search engines become aware of every page on the site, including any URLs that are not discovered through the normal crawling process used by the engine. Sitemaps are helpful if a site has dynamic content, is new and does not have many links to it, or contains a lot of archived content that is not well-linked.

Sitemap is a list of pages on a website that is accessible to all users. An XML sitemap is a way for website owners to tell search engines about all the pages that exist on their website. Sitemaps allow those websites to help search engines crawl the sites more efficiently.

HTML Sitemap: It's for human visitor. This sitemap accumulates all website link on one page. We can put 100 links on one page.

XML Sitemap: XML sitemap, sometimes called Google sitemap is very beneficial for your website. This sitemap provides a single location to search engine crawler to crawl all of your web pages.
