Along with backlinks, checking your competitors keywords is also a good idea
Try spyfu for that, it is great but paid, then free is not always great
for backlinks, backlinkwatch or some other desktop softwares like linkassistant is also good, they have improved functionalities like emailing the webmasters of those websites where your competitor has a backlink and even the ability to manage the links resource pages etc.

thanks for those links, I'll be sure to check them out. Another cool tool for competitor investigations is http://www.my-ip-neighbors.com/ which helps you find all the sites hosted on a particular server. If you're competitor is on a dedicated, that's all his sites right there.  :o

This is nice I could spend all day on this backlink checker.  I would like to mention though not everything is backlinks sometimes these are spammy and actually hurt search engine results!

Agree.
They say that Google shows only most important links (link:somedomain.com).
I do not know if it is true.

I think the yahoo site explorer is the best option for this. Just put the URL of the competitor's site in the search string and you will get the whole list of the sites where your competitor had made submissions. :)

To check the backlinks of your competitors, you can use various online tools available for this purpose. Here are a few steps you can follow:

1. Identify your competitors: Start by identifying your main competitors in your niche or industry.

2. Use backlink analysis tools: There are several popular backlink analysis tools such as Ahrefs, SEMrush, Moz, and Majestic SEO. These tools provide detailed information about a website's backlink profile.

3. Enter competitor's URL: Once you have chosen a backlink analysis tool, enter your competitor's URL into the tool's search bar. The tool will then fetch and display the backlinks pointing to that website.

4. Analyze backlink data: Analyze the data provided by the tool, which usually includes information about the source of the backlink, its quality, anchor text used, and more. This will help you understand the overall backlink profile of your competitor.

5. Compare with your own backlink profile: After analyzing the backlinks of your competitor, you can compare them with your own backlink profile to identify any gaps or opportunities. This analysis can help you develop strategies for strengthening your own backlink profile.

additional tips to help you with backlink analysis of your competitors:

1. Look for high-quality and authoritative websites: While analyzing your competitor's backlinks, pay attention to the quality and authority of the websites linking to them. Focus on identifying websites that have strong domain authority, relevant content, and a good reputation in your industry.

2. Examine anchor text distribution: Anchor text is the clickable text used to create a hyperlink. Analyzing the anchor text distribution of your competitor's backlinks can provide insights into their keyword strategy. Look for patterns in the anchor text used and identify keywords they are targeting.

3. Evaluate the types of backlinks obtained: Different types of backlinks have varying levels of effectiveness. Analyze the types of backlinks your competitors have obtained, such as guest posts, directory submissions, blog comments, or social media mentions. This can help you understand their link building strategy and find opportunities to build similar links.

4. Explore new link-building opportunities: By examining your competitor's backlinks, you might discover potential websites where you should also try to acquire backlinks. Look for websites that are linking to multiple competitors but not to your website. Reach out to these websites and try to establish a relationship that could lead to backlinks for your site as well.

5. Monitor changes over time: Backlink profiles constantly change as new links are acquired and old ones are lost. Regularly monitor your competitor's backlinks to stay updated on any changes or new strategies they might be implementing. This can help you adjust your own SEO and link-building approach accordingly.
