Crawling - Crawling means when web crawlers like Googlebot visits a site, looks for links or information and bring data to Google's server. The crawl process begins with a list of web addresses from the sitemaps provided by website owners.

Indexing - After successful crawling process, those pages and links and submitted it to the Google index, which can be considered similar to the index of a book.

Thus, if someone searches for any query on the Google, the relevant information is sorted out from the Google index and the most indexed and appropriate information is displayed on the Search Engine Result Page (SERP).

Hope, I cleared your doubt as I tried much to explain it in an understandable way.  :)

When we say crawling, it is the process of an engine requesting and successfully downloading a unique URL. Problems to crawling include no links to a URL, server downtime, robots exclusion, or using links from which bots cannot find a valid URL.However indexing is the result of successful crawling. Here are the problems of indexing, it includes duplication, unreliable server delivery, and so on.

Crawling
It is the process where "web crawlers/Googlebot/spider" are used to find out publicly available new and updated webpages and report back to Google.

Indexing
It is like organizing billions of books with no central filing system. Or you can say that, During the crawl process Google gathers the webpages, and then creates an index based on the information about words and their locations.

Most of the guys say that crawling and Indexing are same. But the truth is that both are a little bit different. In terms of Crawling means Google spider download your web page and check the current updating, while in Indexing, Google spider saves that page in his database.

As per my knowledge concern, Indexing is nothing but when you put your website's live URL into search box and if it display the same URL in result then we called it as a index page.
And if the result will not display for that particular live URL then we call it as Crawler have not fetch it yet and it is our responsibility to manually do this by using Google Webmastrer Tool...

Crawling is a process done by web crawler or spider to find out new available and updated pages and report back to the google. Where as indexing is done after crawling, the information about web page gathered in crawling is indexed based on those information, about words and their location.

When ever you post a page or any data on Google,  Google crawls and index it..

Not lets understand what is Crawling

Crawling is the technique where google's bots use to scan the data uploaded by you. It checks what topic it is based on and is it unique or not...

Now lets come to Indexing

Indexing is the technique used by Google post crawling. Here Google index your crawled page in its dictionary so that it can easily show your data when any user puts the query in search engine related to your data...

Hope this was helpful

Thankyou

When you submit the sitemap file to webmaster for crawling, it crawls the submitted urls of your site. It only indexes some of the urls. Crawling means only crawl the website & indexing means to show the urls which are processed/indexed.

CRAWLING: Crawling take place when there is successful fetching of unique URIs   which can be traced from valid links from other webpages because not all links we see on web are crawlable. In Crawling google send spider and  look at your site and takes data from it,.

INDEXING:Indexing take place where crawled URIs are processed. There are many URIs that are processed but only few of them whose content will be processed  through indexing. Indexing is where google incorporate information into the database so that it appears in the search result.

Google or any of the search engines crawls the complete website & only indexes some of it's pages. So crawling means to to consider everything & indexing means only displaying few data.

A web directory could be likened to the traditional yellow phone book directory. With a web directory, you have a bunch of websites that are placed in various categories. When you click on the category page, you will have a list of websites. Each website will have a title that comes in the form of a link, and they will all have descriptions which tell you what the site is about. By reading these descriptions, you will be able to determine whether or not you're interested in visiting the website. Link farms are the exact opposite.

Crawling takes place when there is a successful fetching of unique URIs which can be traced from valid links from other web pages. It's like Pacman following all those dots and eating them, only that in the case of crawling, it's the search engine robots that follow the links.

Indexing takes place after a crawled URIs are processed. Note that there may be several URIs that are crawled but there could be fewer of them whose content will be processed through indexing. The following reasons could be the causes of non-indexing of a previously crawled page.
