what is the difference between sitemap.xml, rss.xml and ror.xml?I have seen the 3 pages in an  insurance niche site

C.Rebecca

See, its not rss.xml or ror.xml

XML, RSS and ROR are different types of sitemaps and ror and xml are Sitemap extensions. And when you use RSS feeds as Sitemap we call it RSS sitemap or something like this.

but why do we use these different types of xml files?

aarisindia

XML Sitemap is an XML file that lists the pages for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) .

ROR (Resources of a Resource) sitemap is an XML format that describes web content as classified objects. ROR expands on the RSS protocol with its own extensions. It is describing any object on a website (sitemaps, services, products, menus, reviews, images, contact info, etc), so any search engines can better understand its content.

Hi friend

What are Sitemaps?

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

What is RSS?

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.
Why RSS? Benefits and Reasons for using RSS
RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.

RSS (originally RDF Site Summary, often dubbed Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed",[3] or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship...

RSS protocol often used in feed files for forums, blogs, etc.
ROR - All search engines which know the RSS sitemap files continue to understand RSS parts of ROR files.
In 2005 google started its own sitemaps protocol based on XML. Further, it was called google sitemaps. Later on, it was changed to XML sitemap protocol.

Resources of a Resource (ROR) is an XML format for describing the content of an internet resource or website in a generic fashion so this content can be better understood by search engines, spiders, web applications, etc  !-!
