Domain age does play a role when it comes to rankings. Older domains are well established and have already acquired a lot of links which the new domains have yet to acquire. Same goes for a domain with bad reputation...
But if you are starting with a new domain you need to concentrate on gaining more quality links to make your space in SERPs as it is always not necessary that an old domain with good reputation will inherit its benefit to the website..
With unique content and quality backlinks you can easily hit a place in Google rankings.

If you are thinking of ranking high solely on the basis of backlinks then you are wrong because backlinks along with on page and off page factors determine your rank in SERPs.

Domain age is a great factor in page ranking. the longer your domain have been up and running in the Internet, the greater its numerical value.

Google certainly takes into consideration the age of a domain when determining it's listing (as well as its PR), think about it would you rather give a top level spot to a site that has been around for years, with thousands of backlinks and content, or to a site that just turned up yesterday regardless of the number of links?

Hi,

Domain Age is the age of your blog. Domain Age is important because it helps people find your blog.
You want your blog to show up on the first page of Google or close to it, unless you don't want people to find your blog.
There are many attributes that go into what shows up on the first page of the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) and one of those attributes is called Domain Age.

Domain age is a factor in determining Google rankings, and a part of our SEO.

Sites are significantly devalued for the first few months after Google first discovers them. It is extremely challenging to rank well for competitive terms in those first few months. In fact, some SEO professionals simply won't work with brand new domains.

According to Google's Matt Cutts, the difference between a domain that's 6 months old and 12 months old is very small.

There have been many arguments about the age of a domain..I have seen many case studies saying that domain age is not a big factor when it comes to SERP...You will notice that there are many newly-launched websites outranking those sites that aging 5 years and above..

I have also seen a 5-month old site outranking a 3-year old site and stayed on top for a long time...And now, it's still on first page of Google with a very high level competition keywords...I even have a 3 month old blog that is on page 1 of Google having a keyword with medium competition, out ranking those websites aging 1 year and above.
