A good thing to do that I began doing myself is taking Google sheets and mapping out an abundance of Dofollow links to initially sleeve out a site. With lots of thorough surveying and scouting, you'll eventually amass a nice little stockpile of early ones to begin developing the site with.

As far as high-quality ones, it really depends on the niche. It certainly pays to do some groundwork and map out social infrastructures. I was attempting to work my way into getting a MOZ Dofollow, so I observed the lay of the land read some articles and attempted to find a way to get my foot in the door.

Well, it turns out you pretty much already had to have a name for yourself in the SEO world to be able to host a whiteboard or Guest blog but I found a solution. Apparently, you got the NoFollow tag removed from your profile after answering and contributing 200 points within their systematics of community contributions. Which for me equated to answering  170 SEO questions lol.

I managed to pull it off in the free month trial for the pro version of the MOZ Toolbar. Sometimes it's a review of a product within your niche, other times it's a really high DA 2.0 that you write a killer post.

I would suggest pulling a backlink report on someone leading within your niche to get started.

For me the easy way to get backlinks are social sharing like facebook, twitter, linkedin, medium, pinterest as they are having good DA and PA. Forum posting is only good for getting quality backlinks by joining in the forum that has high DA and PA like the forum that we are having right now.

To check the DA or PA of one website, I use this website

In response to your question, one way is to check and look at where your competitors are getting some of their links from. You can use tools some link tools from sites ahrefs or majestic to breakdown and analyze your competitors link sources. Obviously not all of their link sources are of good quality but it's up to you which ones you are going to shoot for.
