Why is the SEO industry so tarnished with images of rogue cowboy linkbuilders and people who simply take your hard earned cash and then do zilch in terms of SEO. In fact the whole subject is associated with a mystical unseen art or strategy. Why has this image developed and can it be reversed

I know a lot of friends (very non technical) who have lost good money paying SEO specialists who do nothing more than adding a few backlinks (unrelated in most cases) and walk away with the money!!

Seo qualification mostly based on the experience. So everybody can say that he (she) is experienced seo professional.
And you pay money for nothing.
My advise is to hire proven seo specialist with recommendations.

Yeah i got burnt with SEO cowboys when I was new too. I definitely agree if you go with an SEO professional, check their client testimonials by actually speaking to their clients and even better go on recommendations of friends, colleagues or people you know that have had good work done!

SEO cowboys are now as common as cowboy builders.

Exactly what the admin said , people simply quote their experience and other untangible milestones. People fall for their magic sales pitch and before you know it you realise you've been had.
