The term "search engine" is often used generically to describe both crawler-based search engines and human-powered directories. These two types of search engines gather their listings in radically different ways.
Crawler-Based Search Engines
Crawler-based search engines, such as Google, create their listings automatically. They "crawl" or "spider" the web, then people search through what they have found.
If you change your web pages, crawler-based search engines eventually find these changes, and that can affect how you are listed. Page titles, body copy and other elements all play a role.
Human-Powered Directories
A human-powered directory, such as the Open Directory, depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.
Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed for free than a poor site.
"Hybrid Search Engines" Or Mixed Results
In the web's early days, it used to be that a search engine either presented crawler-based results or human-powered listings.

Search engines tools have two noteworthy capacities: creeping and building a record, and furnishing inquiry clients with a positioned rundown of the sites they've decided are the most pertinent.

Connections permit the web indexes' robotized robots, called "crawlers" or "creepy crawlies," to achieve the numerous billions of interconnected records on the web.

Once the motors discover these pages, they interpret the code from them and store chose pieces in monstrous databases, to be reviewed later when required for a hunt inquiry. To perform the great assignment of holding billions of pages that can be gotten to in a small amount of a second, the web crawler organizations have developed datacenters everywhere throughout the world.

There are three basic stages for a search engine: crawling - where content is discovered; indexing - where it is analysed and stored in huge databases; and retrieval, where a user query fetches a list of relevant pages.
Crawling (It is where it all begins - the acquisition of data abou ta website. This involves scanning the site and getting a complete list of everything on there - the page title, images, keywords it contains, and any other pages it links to - at a bare minimum);
Indexing (you'd be forgiven for thinking this is an easy step - indexing is the process of taking all of that data you have from a crawl, and placing it in a big database);
Ranking and retrieval (the last step is what you see- you type in a search query, and the search engine attempts to display the most relevant documents it finds that match your query. This is the most complicated step, but also the most relevant to you, and as web developers and users).

The process of SEO is quite simple but not quite as easy to implement.
Search Engine Optimization works by increasing the website traffic to your website through implementing link building, link exchange, blogging, etc techniques which results in the generation of back links which would drive your ranking up or in some case down.
It is basically your website promotion tactic which would boost your business and revenue.
