I live in a small town and I can't even get to the first page!  It's only been a week.  Is that the problem?

I'm trying to rank this page.

Ok... you'll need to lower your expectations. Page one can take 6 - 9 months... or even a year depending on competition and other factors.

Without out knowing more about your strategy... I would base my timeline with the above.

By the way... you can rank a site quicker... but if you want it to stick, and you do things naturally... then you're gonna have to be patient.

How likeable are you?
Let's assume that you have all the right skills and qualifications, but are you easy to work with? Do your co-workers like working with you? How is your relationship with your managers? If you think that your skills and qualifications alone will increase your salary, you're dead wrong.

Who will fight for you?
If your manager is not willing to fight for your salary, it's a clear sign that, while you might be able to do your job, they don't care to see you leave. Of course, there are cases when managers want to keep you, but raises are blocked at a higher level.

However, you see this as a pattern, so I will assume that this is happening at your manager's level. No matter how good you may be at your job, it will not matter if nobody is willing to fight for you. The next chance there is to fire you like an incident or another "reorg," you'll be out because they will fight for others.

The Ideal Employee.
I don't think the ideal employee has every skill and qualification listed in the job description; however, an ideal employee is willing to learn and not defer so easily to "it's not in my swim lane." Managers want someone easy to work with. Company politics also play a big role in your salary increases because there needs to be good reasons for the raise that can be said to everyone at all levels. When managers look into your request for a raise, they will also ask your co-workers because they can confirm those reasons.
