How to Stop Failing at SEO?

In regards to your question, when things are getting static or not improving SEO wise, what I often do is just take a step back and get back to the basics.
Take a look at original seo articles and basic core guidelines and honestly analyze your site and what's changed. One of my favorite all time seo site is The Beginner's Guide to SEO located at https://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo. Going over it every now and then can really help to see why might your site befailing and struggling in SEO.

In addition I would advise to check out the Bing Webmaster Guidelines and Google Webmaster Guidelines and get some good reminders on some core features that your site might have deviated over the years. Over time I think all of us forget a little on what originally worked and try all to many different things which can hurt the SEO progress.

first, do the analysis of links pointing towards your site and remove all the toxic backlinks and then start building quality backlinks along with the on-page optimization.

What do you consider failing? Are you failing if you don't rank for a 100,000 monthly search volume keyword within 3 months? If so, then you'll "fail" for as long as you do SEO.

Failing is a matter of perception so would need to know what you mean by it.

Do on-page Optimization without fail and build relevant backlinks and never use any tool or plug in to build backlinks!

Take a look at the following list and apply them to your own campaign frustrations before jumping on the “bash Google” bandwagon! 1 – You're using outdated tactics. 2 – Your website sucks. 3 – You don't have analytics and goal tracking installed. 4 – Your niche is too competitive. 5 – Your keyword focus is too narrow.
