HTML sitemaps appear as a webpage and are human readable whereas XML sitemaps are machine readable, making a website more accessible to web robots, such as googlebot .HTML sitemaps are created and available for viewing by website visitors to help them navigate through a website.XML are intended for search engines and spiders not website visitors. XML sitemaps can be visible with any web browser, but their main function is to provide the URLs of a website to search engines.

HTML sitemap is generally for the user, which help them to find the pages easily. Whereas XML sitemap is for Google Spider which help then to crawl the webpage easily.

A XML sitemap is specifically intended for search engine spiders. XML is a file that includes all the behind the scenes activity on a web site.
HTML is just a general overview of the site, just the pages and info a user needs to be concerned with.

In my opinion:
HTML sitemap is a page within your site that links to all the other important pages on your site. You can see an example of this on my Archives page. I call it “Archives”, but it is nothing more than an HTML sitemap.
An XML sitemap does pretty much the same thing, but instead of using HTML (which a browser can interpret like any other page) it uses XML, which is a markup language to encode documents. This means that the XML sitemap will only be useful/make sense to search bots, while the HTML sitemap will also be visible/useful to human visitors.
In my opinion most websites should have an HTML sitemap. Why? For two main reasons: it helps search engines crawl and understand your site, and it helps human visitors browse your site more efficiently.
Why do I say “most” and not “all” websites? Because some specific types might not need it. Very small sites or online stores, for example, might not need an HTML sitemap because finding the single pages there is straight forward. For content based websites like blogs, however, the HTML sitemap is really helpful.
Hope it's useful for you! Thanks

HTML Sitemap is specially intended for human visitors. This sitemap consists of all urls of your site on a single page.

XML site is for search engine spiders/bots. Search engines can get a signal from xml sitemap that how many web pages of your site to crawl.

Sitemaps are very important for your homepage SEO. Once you are done creating your sitemap, it is recommended that you submit it to Google webmasters tool so that Google can crawl your sitemaps. However, people often get confused when it comes time to decide which type of site map is better to use. Well, it all depends on your website’s purpose.

The XML sitemap is for search engine spiders/bots. It is there to tell the search engines which URLs are part of your website. It appears as code. It helps the search engines find pages that they might miss on a normal crawl and it is also good if you have dynamic content or is new. Submit the XML sitemap as a feed in webmaster tools.
