I certainly have read Google's update however based upon my observations and hours of research in the field, I'm going to say my theory is they might have nerfed it, but it is still very much an edge to use Exact Math Domains.

Cars.com seems to be holding its ground. granted they advertise more than one car companies vehicles, but none the less I'm sure quite a few companies would love to move in on that number one spot.

From the perspective of conducting reputation management, I have to admit I found it still particularly annoying pushing slander EMDs off page one and these things had no backlinks showing up in any tools I used (I'm sure they had some just nothing significant.)

None the less it still took a substantial amount of social profile hardening to get my clients web properties sufficient authority to dominate page 1 in most instances involving a EMD.

Despite Google's public stance about the EMD update closing the exact match domain name optimization loophole, some misconceptions remain that buying exact match domains actually works. When purchasing an exact match domain, most webmasters today have good intentions.

Depends on the niche. Analyze first page results for your target keyword and see if there are any exact match domains. If there are, then the work for that niche.
