Google:

  • Title - used to be up to 65-70 chars, but now it's more width based, so you shouldn't go for more than 55 chars. If you start each word with a capital letter, then the title should be under 50 chars;
  • Meta Description - 156 chars.

Bing:

  • Title - Same as Google;
  • Meta Description - Same as Google.

Here's a tool I use to preview titles - http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool. It also shows how your title looks like after certain search queries, because search engines bold the keywords, therefore the width increases.

Hi Heris Charles,

There are no limitations for title and description tags, but its recommended that your title should be 60 to 70 characters and description should be 160 characters because Google shows title and description in search results as recommended above. :) :) :)

There are some guidelines by Google on Title tag and meta tags optimization. If you follow those guidelines, the chances of higher rankings in SERPs are more. Google does not count the title length in characters. but in pixels. Currently the limit of title tag has been set to 600 pixels which accommodate 60 characters approximately. So the ideal length of your title tag should be around 60 characters. And that of Meta Description should be 160 characters approximately.

The length of title should be 65 characters for Google and description should be limited up to 160 characters. As after the text goes 160 characters, it's truncated & SERPs visitors could not see the text after it.

Google typically displays the first 50–60 characters of a title tag.
Meta Description can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. It is best to keep Meta Tags long enough that they're sufficiently descriptive but shorter than that 160-character limit.
