I'm a senior with a part time home based business in the Denver area. It peaked in 2016 and has trickled downwards since. Part of it is because Denver has grown from about a million people, to about 3 million and a lot of big companies and smaller competition moved in, and started undercutting me on prices. When I started the business, I was cautioned about "being the cheap guy" and have resisted that kind of thing - especially since my work involves driving around town in increasingly HORRIBLE traffic. The big guys can hire people all over town, so the people they hire can have a smaller area. I cant, and would go out of business if I charged what they do.

As this happened, SEO has become way more crucial. Years ago ( I started this business around 2005 ) I could just use keywords on my page, and be at the top of the first page, in organics. But since 2016, it's been falling. Also, Google started hassling people who weren't "brick and mortar" offices, and lowering them in the maps box near the top - AGAIN favoring the big guys who can afford fancy offices. ( I THINK. Either that, or my falling SEO took me out of that map box spotlight too. )

So I'm essentially sinking here, cant afford to hire a big expert on SEO and need to learn this myself, or else.

I also must be a complete idiot when it comes to marketing - writing Adwords in ways that people will flock to, or even wording my home page title and meta description in the best way possible to draw them in. My competitors all seem to be throwing tons of keywords into the page titles and meta descriptions, and they almost all look the same, but they're WINNING. ( I don't think it's because of the titles and descriptions, though? )

I posted some, in another popular forum, and the main problem that I seem to have, is that there's a disconnect between myself, who knows my business better than any SEO person could, and someone who knows SEO better than I could, but doesn't know my business. It's as if I were offering a small list of services, and the SEO person tells me to put each service on a page of its own, but knowing my business, I'd look like an idiot if I did that, AND my competitors arent doing it either. In fact, I don't know what they ARE doing, to get to the top of organics - except maybe spending a LOT of money on really good SEO experts that I cant afford. The main thing they seem to be doing, is offering cheap prices, right at the top of Google ads, and we're going under here.

SO in the past, when I was at the top of the organics AND showing up in the starred box of Google Maps on the SERP, we were doing pretty ok, but not now. We're very scared, because we don't know what we could do for a living if we lose this small business.

So I'm not sure what to do, at this point. I could use a thoughtful but not harsh, critique, that I could understand, and could help me move things in the right direction - both with organic AND Adwords.
