It seems like the links they targeted most are those with exact match keyword phrases in the anchor text. More specifically, sites with link profiles where over 50% of the backlinks are exact match keywords. I know another big one is targeting links from irrelevant sites too.

It is the anchor text of their people with the exact match keyword phrases is the target link looks like. More specifically, the link profile and the site of more than 50% of back links is not exact match. I do not have one other big goal is to link from the site I know.

Unnecessary stuffing of keywords are no more effective for improving search engine rankings. Moreover you should not build so many back links from the same website.

Yes, it will help to give good position (in search engine) to those sites who working professionally (white hat S.E.O). Now search engine clean all those sites which are having spamming stuff and come via black hat SEO.
