Yes, it is true that excessive search engine optimization (SEO) can lead to over-optimization, which can negatively impact your website's ranking. Over-optimization occurs when SEO techniques are applied in an unnatural or excessive way, such as keyword stuffing, creating low-quality content, or building too many backlinks using manipulative tactics.

To avoid over-optimization, it's important to focus on creating high-quality and relevant content for your target audience rather than trying to game the system with excessive SEO techniques. Here are some ways to avoid over-optimization:

1. Focus on creating valuable and informative content that naturally incorporates keywords rather than forcing them into the text.
2. Use diverse and natural anchor texts for backlinks instead of repetitive or keyword-stuffed anchor texts.
3. Keep your website's structure and navigation user-friendly and intuitive.
4. Avoid using doorway pages or other sneaky redirects to manipulate search engine rankings.
5. Regularly monitor and analyze your website's performance to identify any signs of over-optimization and make necessary adjustments.

By following these guidelines, you can strike a balance between optimizing your website for search engines and providing a positive user experience, thus avoiding the pitfalls of over-optimization.

Here are the signs that yuo have over optimized your website:
- de-indexation (a loss of pages  in the search engine index);
- ranking plummets (either for specific keywords ot groups of keywords);
- your web traffic dries up to a mere trickle or shadow of  its former volume.
SEO requires a delicate  balance between what is considered relevant, natural and popular from the perspective of off-page SEO (link velocity) and peer review.This requires impeccable continuity for on page considerations such as how to employ internal links, prevent duplicate  content or structure superb navigation, page templates or site architecture.
Get any of these  metrics wrong by oberdoing them and you're likely to incur a penalty. First you should understand the parameters of optimization before knowing which metrics to focus on and in what order.

Too much SEO will definitely impact negatively on the rankings despite the number of back links you generate.
Any search engine observes trends or patterns of the SEO you are doing for the site, if it notices something spammy or in the gray area of SEO, it will not necessarily de-index the site but it will penalize the site and this can be observed in google analytics and search console tools.

To avoid this, just follow white hat seo techniques e.g do not generate more than 15-20 max. back links in a day, create unique & non-plagiarized content, share that over social networks, do guest posting on blogs, participate in forums, build a trusted link exchange community, etc.
