My site shows up in search results, but not for the keywords I want.
Maybe your chosen keyword is not that competitive. Why don't you consider those keyword where your website has shown up? You can use those keyword if you want to.

you want to increse your site by off-page and on page,seo is compusary for that.

Try to  examine again your keyword, you  might got the wrong choice of keyword. Then change it.

To rank the keyword must work on the keyword. In the sense must optimize the keywords in search engine. Most people search only by keywords and not by url of the site. So keyword ranking also important for a website. To make keywords rank better one can do Off-page optimization strategies such as article submission, directory submission, forum posting, blog posting, etc.
