With the dynamic nature of the web, having a sitemap for your website is a necessity that can only be ignored by people courting their own peril. However, some webmasters get lost whenever they decide to create sitemap for their sites and realize there are two types; HTML and XML sitemaps. Well, though the roles of both sitemaps are closely related, their targets differ; while HTML sitemaps target users, XML sitemaps on the other hand are meant for the search engines.
A HTML sitemap is like a plan to all pages in a website that visitors can use to find information on a site, some that may appear concealed. In as much as this type primarily targets the user, it also helps improve your search engine rankings since the site will be deemed to be user-friendly and serves the users’ interests. XML sitemap protocol is purposely aimed at the search engine spiders. It contains all the URLs in a site as well as associated metadata like the last time URL was modified, its importance to the site, frequency of changes and how it relates to the rest of the website among others. You can create XML and HTML sitemaps with the help of a sitemap generator.

HTML sitemaps are displayed with the user in mind and with the same structure: they are usually linear, or top-down showing the content hierarchy of the site, they provide the user with an easily readable table of contents, thus showing them how to get to their page destination.

XML sitemaps do pretty much the same thing as a HTML but they are in a different type of web code and document. They are also a visible list but provide URLs to the web crawlers that give additional data about the pages metatags. They show data on whether there have been changes to the page and how often it changes compared to other URLs on that site.

They are made with the same purpose but for different targets. XML Sitemap is file placed in the root directory which contains the list of URLs you want to be crawled, and is obviously created for search robots. There different types of XML Sitemap: image, video, news etc. HTML Sitemap, on the contrary, is created to serve users. It looks like an ordinary page within your website and contains links to all essential pages.

The simplest explanation is that XML is primarily for the search engines while HTML is written for the users. A XML sitemap protocol is specifically intended for search engine spiders. At its root, XML is a file that includes all the behind the scenes activity on a web site.

An HTML site-map provides a overview of the site. Users who navigate there see a list of all the pages on the website, making it easy to find a page that they may be looking for.

An XML site-map is built for the search engines. This file allows the search engine behind the curtain of your website and points the search engine’s crawler directly to the right information.

Hello guys..

I would like to know that what is the difference between  HTML sitemap and XML sitemap ? tell me ..

The simplest explanation is that XML is primarily for the search engines while HTML is written for the users.

A XML sitemap protocol is specifically intended for search engine spiders. At its root, XML is a file that includes all the behind the scenes activity on a web site. Not just the site’s main URL, but all the URLs within the site along with the associated metadata. This can include when the URL was last updated, how important it is, the average frequency changes occur, the URLs relation to the rest of the site, etc.

HTML is just a general overview of the site, just the pages and info a user needs to be concerned with. If you’re on a web site and you’re looking for the shopping cart or the ‘Contact Us’ page and can’t find it, you’d go to the sitemap and easily find it there. While this is geared towards the user, it can also help your search engine ranking because your site is user-friendly and catering to the site visitor.
