As an SEO beginner where should I get started?  Some basic backlinks maybe?
THanks

Keyword Density - It is a common misconception that having your desired keyword appear over and over again in your content is the way to rank well for that keyword.

HTML Tags - These are the areas you will want to make sure your keywords are in. Your title and h1 tags are good places to start

Meta Keywords/Description - The meta keywords tag is another place where some people have misconceptions.

Reciprocal/Paid/Low-Quality Links - Now we are getting to one of the most important aspects of SEO, link building.

First stop do some keyword research and figure out what terms you want to rank for. This is the most important part. Once you know what you want to rank for then yes, start building those links....

Link building has to be up there as your start point, or even link exchanges as good link exchanges do build up your rankings. Obviously not any old loose links but tightly related ones.

I'm no SEO expert but I think backlinks are the only real thing you need to work on to get a half decent ranking.

I am agree with the " ryosuzuki" the first and most important step is keyword research if you choose right keyword then only your whole SEO strategy will work otherwise after doing so much work you wont be able to get good traffic on the site. So do keyword research very carefully.
