Search engine optimization, also known as SEO, first started being used by webmasters and internet content providers in the mid-90s. Just in case you are unsure, SEO is the process of designing and creating content that will result in increased amounts of quality traffic to a website from organic or un-paid search results. Like many things internet related SEO has evolved over the years.

The history of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) dates back to the inception of search engines in the early 1990s. While it is difficult to pinpoint a single individual as the first one to start SEO, several pioneers contributed to its development.

One crucial figure in the early days of SEO is Alan Emtage, who is credited with creating Archie, the first search engine that indexed FTP files. Another notable pioneer is Brian Pinkerton, who developed WebCrawler in 1994, one of the earliest full-text search engines.

However, some credit the birth of modern SEO to a discussion between webmasters on the online forum "WebmasterWorld" in the late 1990s. This discussion led to the coining of the term "search engine optimization" and the recognition of its importance in improving website visibility on search engines.

In the late 1990s, search engines like Yahoo!, AltaVista, and Excite dominated the online landscape. Webmasters quickly realized the value of appearing at the top of search engine results pages (SERPs) and began experimenting with various tactics to improve their rankings.

At that time, SEO techniques were relatively straightforward and included keyword stuffing, meta tag manipulation, and link farming. These practices focused more on manipulating search engine algorithms rather than providing valuable content for users.

However, search engines started evolving and became more sophisticated in the early 2000s. In 1998, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, introducing a revolutionary approach to search with its PageRank algorithm. Google aimed to deliver more relevant and trustworthy search results by assessing the quality and relevancy of web pages based on incoming links.

This shift forced webmasters to adapt their SEO strategies, focusing more on building high-quality backlinks and creating valuable content that would naturally attract links. As Google's dominance grew, it continuously refined its algorithms to combat spammy SEO practices and provide better search results to users.

Over the years, numerous SEO best practices emerged, such as on-page optimization, technical SEO, mobile optimization, local SEO, and content marketing. Today, SEO is a multifaceted discipline that combines technical expertise, user experience, content creation, and outreach efforts to enhance website visibility and drive organic traffic.

With the rise of voice search, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, SEO continues to evolve, requiring practitioners to stay updated with the latest trends and algorithm changes to maintain strong online visibility.

In the early 2000s, the concept of search engine rankings became increasingly important as businesses recognized the potential of online marketing. This led to the emergence of SEO consultants and agencies that specialized in optimizing websites for better search engine visibility.

One significant milestone in SEO history was the release of Google's "Florida" algorithm update in 2003. This update aimed to combat spammy SEO practices and introduced new ranking factors like website trust and user engagement metrics. It had a significant impact on the SEO community, forcing webmasters to adopt more ethical and sustainable optimization strategies.

In 2005, Google introduced its XML Sitemaps protocol, making it easier for webmasters to submit their website content to be crawled and indexed. This further emphasized the importance of providing search engines with clear and organized information about website pages.

The year 2011 saw the launch of Google's "Panda" algorithm update, which focused on penalizing low-quality and thin content websites. It changed the SEO landscape by prioritizing high-quality, user-focused content and rewarding websites that provided valuable information.

Another significant milestone was the release of the "Mobilegeddon" update in 2015. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and mobile browsing, Google made mobile-friendliness a crucial ranking factor, highlighting the importance of optimizing websites for mobile devices.

In recent years, there has been a greater emphasis on user experience (UX) in SEO. Google's "RankBrain" algorithm, introduced in 2015, utilizes artificial intelligence to understand user intent and deliver more relevant search results. Factors such as page load speed, mobile responsiveness, and intuitive site navigation have become critical for SEO success.

Today, SEO continues to evolve with the advent of voice search, video optimization, and the rise of artificial intelligence. The focus remains on delivering valuable, user-centric content while ensuring technical aspects like crawlability, indexability, and site performance are optimized.

I think Google is the base of the SEO ....if Google search engine will closed means all SEO and SEM employes lost job ..... lol

In short I would say from the early 1990's, website owners woke up to the idea that having highly visible sites in the search engines brought valuable business results.
