Remove extra chatter from your web pages.
Put information where most of the people can see.
Easy navigation to read web pages.
Decrease load time of web pages.
Search box size also matters.
Use the same layout for all pages
Links to your website should be easily able to see.

In my opinion, you should approach a website from an anonymous users perspective. Start on the landing page and see if you make it further without forcing yourself - are you interested in what you are reading/seeing? If you find certain bits hard to get through, they are your sticking areas and need to be changed. People like information, but not too much of it, so make sure your presentation is good in terms of both easy to read and understand content and also a layout that is intuitive and easy to navigate. Thinking about it this way, rather than by making a list of do's and do-not's will make your approach to the enhancement of any site much more flexible.
