Backlinks are a vital component of SEO b/c the number of backlinks and the quality of these backlinks is still the primary method through which Google and other search engines determine how a site will rank for a certain keyword. The value of backlinks has ebbed as search engines have refined their search algorithms (search engines today consider many factors not just backlinks) but backlinks are still the dominant way that keyword rankings are determined.

Back link value is a ratio between Google Page Rank of a page and the number of links on it. The higher the page's PR and the fewer links on it, the more link juice a link from the page can pass to your site. From an SEO (search engine optimization perspective) backlinks are like votes for your site. A back link is defined as a link from one website pointing back to your site. The value of that back link is related to the PR (page rank) of the site linking back to yours. A site with a bundle of backlinks implies that many other sites link to that site i.e. Popularity. The more of these natural (unpaid) backlinks your sites receives the higher it will rank in search engine search results.

Apart from quality, another important thing is to diversify your backlinks.

It's alright if they are all hidden in some pr0 webpage profile link. They DO COUNT. Even if it's just a tiny bit of link juice each, they do add up as long as they are not too spammy.

A website without any visitors is nothing but a cost and liability for a company.  A website can get traffic with what's termed backlinks. Backlinks are incoming links form other websites on the internet that simply point back to your site.  The number and quality of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of your website. Not all backlinks carry the same weight or value. The significance and value of a link depends on the relevancy and credibility from the linked site. The quality and quantity of traffic coming back to your site depends on the quality of links posted on other sites. Only significant and qualified links enable the development of targeted traffic. If you're looking to develop backlinks for your business, don't build links just for the sake of building them. Backlinks from unrelated sites will likely drive unrelated traffic to your site. Sites can also be penalized if all they are doing is creating links for the sake of creating links.

There are many things we need to consider for valuating a link.
1. Need to check whether the backlink is from related niche.
2. Has good page rank in it.
3. Whether the page has been indexed in search engine or one.
4. Whether the backlink is a text link or anchor links.
