Link building methods have changed a lot. Now you need to focus on quality links, not quantity. I would suggest you follow the following link building techniques or methods:

1. Guest Posting
2. Broken Link Building
3. Infographic
4. Social Bookmarking
5. Article Submission
6. Question and Answer

Make sure you are posting quality content on your website. Also, keep spying your competitors.

#1: you want to make sure that you are not mass building any links to your website except citations.
#2: make sure that the first 10-15 links your website gets are the highest quality links you can get. Websites that receive organic traffic and that are relevant to your niche are the best links for these initial links. You want to make sure that you don't mess up your first couple of links because if you do, your website will take a hit and probably won't recover for the next 6-8 months.
#3: have enough content on your website when you start building backlinks. I know this is common sense but it has to be said. You need to make sure that your website looks halfway decent and have a decent amount of content.
#4: if it's a local website, start with social profiles and citations. Let those sit for at least 15-20 days and then start building other types of backlinks.
#5: guest posts are the best type of links you can build these days. So always go for those
