IP canonicalization saves your website to less the chances of duplicate content.
When a search engine spider indexes a website, it gathers as much information about the website as possible. It also includes IP address also of you connection. If you have multiple domain names under one IP address, the search engine could possibly label one the websites as duplicate content.

www.mydomain.com and mydomain.com should resolve to the same URL, but currently do not.

Your site's IP xхx.xхx.xx.xхx does not redirect to your site's domain name. This could cause duplicate content problems if a search engine indexes your site under both its IP and domain name. Consider using a 301 re-write rule in your .htaccess file so that your site's IP points to your domain name. Read more about canonical URL issues

Canonicalization is the process of ensuring that you don't provide the same content at more than more URL. It's also one of the hardest words in SEO to pronounce. :) If you don't address canonicalization, you can end up with identical content at multiple URL's, which can present duplicate content issues. And you don't want duplicate content. For example, you don't want your site to resolve at both non-www and www, at both http and https, using mixed case, having folders resolve with and without trailing slashes, etc.

Ip canonicalization issue occurs when the IP of you website does not get converted or redirected into the Domain name of your web site.
for eg.

suppose your website's IP is 02.333.231.111 or something like this then if you put your IP on your browser instead of putting your domain name as a URL then it should get redirected automatically to your website's domain name.
and
if not,
then it is an IP canonicalization issue.

Canonicalization uses to how a website can use different URLs for the same content. The canonicalization error occurs, when a websites's IP address and domain name display the same page, but do not resolve to the same URL.The problems with IP Canonicalization can be fixed using redirect.

From the SEO point of view, IP canonicalization is essential for a website. IP canonicalization saves your website to less the chances of duplicate content. Search engines can impose fine when some website publishes content which is exactly same on other website.
