If you need to change the URL of a page as it is shown in search engine results, we recommend that you use a server-side 301 redirect. This is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.

A 301 is a permanent redirect from one URl to another. Example - if we wanted to redirect www.example.com/old to www.example.com/new , we' would need to implement a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.  Once this redirect has been implemented someone typing in www.example.com/old would land on www.example.com/new via the 301 redirect.

In the simplest of "technical definitions", a 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to the other. A 301 redirect also is often described as a "change of address form" you might get at a post office. If someone doesn't know you moved, you want to make sure all your mail is forwarded to your new place.

A 301 Redirect is the most efficient and SEO-friendly way of permanently redirecting an old URL to a new one.

A 301 redirect simply takes the entered URL for a requested resource and redirects the browser to its new location. The instructions for this page-to-page redirect are listed after the short paragraph & navigation below.  Usually a 301 redirect includes the address to which the resource has been moved.

For example, if you change platforms and you have a page that used to be at http://mystore.com/my-old-page and is now at http://mystore.com/my-new-page, you want to make sure that anyone who goes to the old page is redirected to the new page. This is partly for optimizing SEO (so Google realizes your page still exists, but with a new location) and partly about customer experience -- you don't want customers to see an error if they click on an outdated link.

A 301 redirect  is a web server function where an old URL can be redirected to a new one. A 301 redirect is typically used on a website to ensure users and search engines can access the latest version of a webpage that has been moved from the original URL.

A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one URL to another. It is often used when a website or webpage has been moved to a different location or when the URL structure of a website has been changed. The purpose of a 301 redirect is to ensure that visitors and search engines are automatically redirected to the new URL, preserving any existing SEO value and preventing broken links.

additional information about 301 redirects:

- A 301 redirect is implemented at the server level, meaning it happens before the requested page is loaded. It tells the server to redirect any requests for a specific URL to a different URL permanently.

- When a 301 redirect is set up correctly, it communicates to search engines that the original URL has permanently moved to a new location.

- This redirection also transfers the SEO value (such as backlinks and rankings) from the old URL to the new one, helping maintain search engine visibility and ranking.

- One common application of a 301 redirect is when a website changes its domain name, and all the old URLs need to redirect to the corresponding new URLs.

- It is important to note that a 301 redirect should be used sparingly and only when necessary. Overuse can negatively impact website performance and user experience.

- It's recommended to monitor and update any existing 301 redirects regularly to ensure they are still needed and functioning correctly.

points about 301 redirects:

- Implementing a 301 redirect involves configuring the server to send a "301 Moved Permanently" status code along with the new URL. This informs search engines and browsers that the requested content has been permanently moved to the new location.

- 301 redirects are also useful when consolidating multiple similar pages or pieces of content into a single, canonical URL. This can help avoid duplicate content issues and consolidate the SEO value into a single page.

- In addition to preserving SEO value, 301 redirects also help maintain user experience by automatically redirecting visitors to the new URL. This ensures that they land on the correct page even if they have an outdated bookmark or click on a link from another website.

- It's important to set up 301 redirects properly to avoid potential pitfalls. This includes ensuring that the redirect is implemented at the server level rather than relying on JavaScript or Meta tags, which may not be as effective for both search engines and users.

- Redirect chains, where multiple redirects are in place, should be avoided as they can slow down the redirection process and potentially impact website performance.

- It's a best practice to test and monitor the 301 redirects after implementation to ensure they are functioning correctly and redirecting to the intended destination. Tools like Google Search Console can help identify any issues related to redirects.

- When implementing a 301 redirect, it's crucial to map the old URLs to their corresponding new URLs. This mapping ensures that visitors and search engines are redirected to the most relevant content on the new site.

- In some cases, if a particular page or content no longer exists on the new site, you can choose to redirect users and search engines to a related page or provide a custom error page (like a 404) informing them about the change.

- It's recommended to update any internal links on your website to point directly to the new URLs instead of relying solely on redirects. This helps improve website performance and provides a better user experience.

- If you have multiple versions (such as HTTP and HTTPS) or different variations (www and non-www) of your website, it's important to set up appropriate 301 redirects to consolidate them to a single preferred version. This can help avoid duplicate content and potential SEO issues.

- When creating a new website or changing the URL structure, it's a good practice to inform search engines about the changes through XML sitemaps and resubmitting them using Search Console or similar tools.

- It's worth noting that the effectiveness of 301 redirects can vary in terms of speed and caching across different web servers and platforms. So, it's always a good idea to test the redirects thoroughly after implementation to ensure they are working as expected.

Remember, 301 redirects are a powerful tool for website maintenance and SEO. However, it's essential to use them judiciously, monitor their effectiveness, and periodically evaluate the necessity of existing redirects to maintain an optimal website performance.

301 is used for redirecting purpose, i will tell you in depth see below.

1. let assume just now i am designing one web site URL like www.fugenx.com. Now i am using redirecting process because instead am using www.fugenx.com i will search like  fugenx.com, htttp://fugenx.com, http://www.fugenx.com, fugenx.com/index.php then also it will show my website only. it is done through only 301 redirection process.

2. One more example due to some problem i was changed my URL . again by using 301 direction we can redirect to our previous address.  so 301 direction is more useful than others.
