there are plenty of resources online but you should create a google webmasters account and you will have access to an on-page seo guide by google - no better place to start!

You can start with use of On page SEO because it is first step of SEO to do On page. If you website has no On page SEO then your website will get treble to achieve good position on search engine.

A few things to look for in a search engine friendly website,
- Search engine friendly lay out (no flash and AJAX files)
- Loading time of the page
- Navigation of the websites (no broken links or dead ends)
- Avoid placing important content in Javascripts
- No sneaky redirects
- Image optimization
- Video optimization
