Because they don't want to promote others through their website.

No-follow was introduced as a link attribute back in 2005 as a way to tell search engines like Google that the link should not be “counted” by them.

The problem back then was that they counted all links as votes of confidence in a website as that was how Google’s algorithm was created.

But, certain links like advertisements and paid links should not be counted as such as they are not votes, but bought. So the nofollow was intended as a way to show that.

It has since been used extensively by websites to show that they do not trust a link and do not want Google to think they endorse it.

Some website owners do it on all blog posts if they allow guest posters (I think it is lazy) because they do not know or care to check what links the posters are adding to their content.

Nofollow links are links with a rel=”nofollow” HTML tag applied to them. The nofollow tag tells search engines to ignore that link. Because Nofollow links do not pass PageRank they likely don't impact search engine rankings.

Some links do not transmit authority from one website to another, at least not all that the follow links passed. Although they do not share that force, the so-called 'link juice', Google continues to take these links into account; that is, it continues to track them but in a different way.

With no-follow links, it no longer made so much sense to focus the SEO strategy on placing links on websites with great authority since many of these websites, such as Wikipedia, decided that all their external links were going to have the Nofollow attribute. In this way, Google put an end to spam in the form of links.

Although it does not transmit authority, obtaining links from important sites has been maintained, as it is true that although Nofollow links hardly transmit, from websites with a lot of authority, some authority is transmitted. There are even still highly coveted sites where it is possible to get a follow link.
