I believe what matters most is Google and the backlinks showing up in Webmasters tools are great indication for that. These tools do give you some idea but go with the best only.

Here so many tools suggested to check backlinks, personally I check backlinks manually by following syntax:
link:www(.)(Domain name)
For example: link:www.cogniter.com
This will show you the number of backlinks for your website.
