Before starting SEO for a website, it's important to perform a thorough site audit to identify any issues that could affect search engine optimization efforts. Here's how you can check the site before starting SEO:

1. Technical Audit: First, conduct a technical audit to ensure that the website is accessible to search engines. Check for crawl errors, broken links, and issues with page speed and mobile-friendliness.

2. On-Page SEO Analysis: Review the on-page elements of the website, including meta tags, headings, and content quality. Ensure that each page is optimized for specific keywords and that the content is valuable and relevant to the target audience.

3. Off-Page SEO Analysis: Assess the website's backlink profile to understand the quality and quantity of inbound links. Identify any toxic or low-quality backlinks that could harm the site's SEO performance.

4. Keyword Research: Conduct keyword research to identify relevant search terms that the website should target. Look for high-volume keywords with low competition to optimize the site's content effectively.

5. Competitor Analysis: Analyze the SEO strategies of competitors to understand their strengths and weaknesses. This can help in developing a more effective SEO strategy for the website.

6. Content Evaluation: Evaluate the existing content on the website to ensure it aligns with SEO best practices. Identify opportunities to create new, valuable content to attract organic traffic.

7. Ranking Analysis: Use SEO tools to examine the website's current ranking for relevant keywords. Identify the keywords for which the site is already ranking and assess their positions in search engine results pages (SERPs).

8. Traffic Assessment: Analyze the website's organic traffic trends to understand its current performance in attracting visitors from search engines. Look for any significant fluctuations or patterns in traffic that may indicate underlying issues.

9. User Experience Evaluation: Assess the overall user experience of the website, including navigation, site architecture, and usability. A positive user experience contributes to higher engagement and improved search visibility.

10. Local SEO Check (if applicable): If the website targets local audiences, verify that it is optimized for local search, including accurate business information, localized content, and local directory listings.

11. Schema Markup Review: Check if the website uses schema markup to provide search engines with additional context about its content. Proper implementation of schema markup can enhance the site's appearance in search results.

12. Site Security and Performance: Ensure that the website is secure (using HTTPS) and loads quickly. Search engines prioritize secure and fast-loading websites, which can impact SEO performance.

13. Sitemap Examination: Check if the website has a properly formatted XML sitemap that includes all relevant pages and content. The sitemap helps search engines understand the site structure and index its pages more efficiently.

14. Mobile-Friendly Testing: Verify that the website is fully optimized for mobile devices. With the increasing use of mobile search, ensuring a seamless experience for mobile users is crucial for SEO success.

15. Social Media Integration: Assess the integration of social media elements on the website. A strong social media presence can complement SEO efforts by driving traffic and engagement.

16. Conversion Rate Analysis: Evaluate the website's conversion paths and calls-to-action to ensure that SEO efforts align with broader marketing goals, such as lead generation or sales.

17. Accessibility Compliance: Check for compliance with web accessibility standards to ensure that the website is inclusive and usable for people with disabilities. This aspect can also have implications for SEO.

18. Content Management System (CMS) Review: If the website uses a CMS, assess its suitability for SEO requirements. The CMS should provide flexibility for optimizing content and managing technical SEO aspects.
