Post by: Smith Jones on 11-08-2011, 06:05:45
Hey friends,

I was wondering, do I really need a sitemap if my site contains several static pages only? Content is static as I am offering services which does not change daily so was wondering if sitemap has any value to my site or no?

Any help highly appreciated here.

Thanks

Sitemaps are of utmost importance when it comes to optimising large websites. Although adding a sitemap to a website will not directly increase your rankings it will make it easier for Google to index pages, which will indirectly impact on rankings.

A site map is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

I think that the question wasn't really about the usefulness of sitemaps as such in general, but how useful one is for a small site which doesn't change often. If all your pages are already indexed then really a sitemap isn't going to make any difference to the search engines. But you can get one done for free easily enough from places like freesitemapgenerator.com, and it wouldn't hurt to submit it to Google and Bing and then only update it and resubmit it if/when you make changes to your site .

Hello friends,

A site map is a visual or textually organized model of a web site's content that allows the users to navigate through the site to find the information they are looking for, just as a traditional geographical map helps people find places they are looking for in the real world. The site map submission to the search engine only helps the search engine to crawl your website more efficiently with all the URLs along with the site map. This site map protocol, however in no way guarantees that your web page will be ranked by the search engine.

Thanks and regards.

If you want a successful website, you'll need to optimize it with search engine optimization tactics. XML Sitemaps are essential part of optimizing, because they help the search engines crawl your website. However, having a sitemap does not always guarantee that all of your web pages, will get into the search engines. Using a sitemap will help to get your website links distributed, and that will help to improve your search engine ranking results.

Even if your website is static and doesn't changes frequently, you need sitemap to crawl and index pages efficiently. For website updation, you can add a blog section in your website and update it on regular basis. This will help your website rank in search engines also.  !-!

Hi,

I think you should to insert sitemap in your site because Sitemap is of 2 types i.e XML for search engine purpose and HTML for use purpose.
As per user point of view if you insert HTML sitemap then a user can get easily what they want, they don't need to search page by page, through HTML sitemap they can get that URL or page what they want.
XML sitemap is for search engine through which search engine can easily crawl all pages at a time. So just use free sitemap generator tool and generate both sitemaps for your site and submit XML sitemap link in your webmaster tool and insert a HTML sitemap link page on your site.

In general, just submit your sitemap to Google. Then it's moral responsibility of Google to access them or not. For the site owners, you have to submit the sitemap in order to crawl your website.

Usign sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer  the opportunity  to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot  expect that search will rush right way to index your changed pages by certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don't have a sitemap.
Also, when you have a sitemap and submit it to the search engines, you rely less on external links  that will bring search engines to your site. Sitemaps can even help with messy internal links - for instance if you by accident have broken internal links or orphaned pages that cannot be reached in other way.
Sitemaps also help in classifying your site content, though search engines are by no means obliged to classify a page as belonging to  a particular category or as matching a particular keyword only because you have told them so.
