Hello,

Is that canonical and 301 redirect same or different and what effects occur by doing both in search engine result page?

Hey Steve,

Canonical URLs are similar to a 301 redirect.

Quoted from seomoz:

"Whereas a 301 redirect re-points all traffic (bots and human visitors), the Canonical URL tag is just for engines, meaning you can still separately track visitors to the unique URL versions."

Take a look at the blog for more info. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps

 Hello Guys,

When a page of your website is being opened with multiple URLs so it would be considered a canonical issue and Google rates it like a Duplication.

The URL redirection service is also popular as URL redirect, URL redirecting, URL forwarding, domain redirection and domain forwarding. In all of the cases it refers to one and the same web technique for pointing a web page to another URL of your choice.

Thanks and Regards

The one authoritatively correct URL for a resource. When a resource can be accessed via multiple URLs, a canonical URL should be identified. All alias URLs for a resource should redirect to the canonical URL to enforce its authority.

Canonical and 301 redirects are different concepts but can both have effects on search engine results pages (SERPs).

A canonical tag is an HTML tag that tells search engines which version of a page should be considered as the preferred or canonical version. It is used to solve duplicate content issues and consolidate ranking signals to a single URL. When used correctly, a canonical tag can help search engines understand the original source of the content and avoid potential penalties for duplicate content.

On the other hand, a 301 redirect is a server-side redirect that permanently redirects one URL to another. It is used when a webpage has permanently moved to a new location. By implementing a 301 redirect, you are telling search engines and users that the original URL has permanently moved to the new URL.

When it comes to the effects on SERPs, using a canonical tag helps avoid duplicate content issues and consolidates the ranking signals to the preferred URL. It can prevent search engines from indexing multiple versions of the same content and potentially diluting the ranking power. However, a canonical tag alone does not redirect traffic or users from one URL to another.

On the other hand, a 301 redirect explicitly redirects traffic and search engine crawlers from an old URL to a new URL. It effectively transfers the ranking power and authority from the old URL to the new one. By using a 301 redirect, you can ensure that users and search engines are directed to the updated URL and avoid broken links or error messages.

So, to summarize, a canonical tag solves duplicate content issues and consolidates ranking signals, while a 301 redirect permanently redirects traffic and search engine crawlers from one URL to another. Both techniques can have positive effects on SERPs, but they serve different purposes.

Both 301 and canonical works similar, With the help of 301 and canonical you can suggest search engine about which page get crawled for search results.

Canonical: When referring to programming, canonical means conforming to well-established patterns or rules. The terms are sometimes used to distinguish whether a programming interface follows a particular standard or precedent or whether it departs from it.
Redirection: URL redirection is an extremely useful service aimed at helping users point their domains or sub domains to certain URLs when necessary. This is usually needed in cases when a certain website is no longer available under its original domain name when all users linking to it need to be automatically informed of this update.

It is almost the same.

A 301 redirect is a permanent  detour from an old URL to a new one.The brand-new page can be on the same domain,or it can also be on different domain.
Canonical issue  means your website is having different URLs(Uniform Resource Locator) with the exact same content.

301 redirects and canonical URLs are two ways to tell search engines which version of a page should be indexed and shown in search results. 301 redirects do a little more than canonical URL's because in addition to search engines and web crawlers, they also redirect the users to the correct version of a page.
I totally agree with you that these are two to tell the search engine which url index and but redirection help to chnage old domain into new domain and canonical help to tell which is your exact url now.

Canonicalization refers to individual web pages that can be loaded from multiple URLs. This is a problem because when multiple pages have the same content but different URLs, links that are intended to go to the same page get split up among multiple URLs. This means that the popularity of the pages gets split up.
