GoDaddy & Hostgator hosting cheap BUT ....

Hey guys,
I know their cheap but I was speaking to an experienced webmaster and he told me that hosting with them is often slow and it's open to hаckers. Their servers and VPS hosting are built on a very weakly tested build and I'm told it's not worth going with them due to this ? Is this something I should be worried about ? Everyone else seems to be using them just fine ?

I've been using Godaddy for two years and everything is fine. I never have any security issue –hope never will. And I see many people who use it have no problem either. But, there's one thing, it does load slow. I am opened to use another hosting provider, if you have other suggestions than those two you have mentioned.
