Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting an SSL certificate for my site, but the prices vary so much some are as low as $10 others go up to $200. What gives and why the price difference ? If anyone can chime in and give me some advise about what type i need that would be great!

Thanks

There are several factors that contribute to the price differences for SSL certificates. One of the main factors is the level of validation provided by the certificate.

Domain Validation (DV) certificates are the most basic type and are typically the cheapest option. They only verify that you have control over the domain name associated with the certificate.

Organization Validation (OV) certificates require additional verification steps, such as verifying your organization's identity and contact information. These certificates offer a higher level of trust and are generally more expensive than DV certificates.

Extended Validation (EV) certificates offer the highest level of validation and require the most rigorous verification process. They display a green address bar in web browsers, indicating a trusted and secure connection. EV certificates are the most expensive option.

Apart from the validation level, the reputation and support provided by the certificate authority (CA) can also influence the price. CAs with a strong brand and positive customer reviews often charge higher prices for their certificates.

To determine which type of certificate is best for your needs, consider the level of assurance you want to provide to your visitors. If you do not require extensive verification, a DV certificate should suffice. If you handle sensitive information or want to establish a high level of trust, an OV or EV certificate may be more suitable.

In addition to the factors mentioned earlier, here are a few more reasons for the price differences:

1. Brand reputation: Some SSL certificate authorities are more well-known and trusted in the industry. Their certificates may come at a higher price due to the brand recognition and reputation they have built over time.

2. Warranty coverage: Higher-priced SSL certificates often come with higher warranty coverage. This means that if a user experiences financial losses due to a mis-issued or improperly functioning certificate, the CA will compensate them up to a certain amount. The higher the warranty coverage, the higher the price.

3. Additional features: Some SSL certificates offer additional features such as daily website scanning for malware, vulnerability assessments, or seal-in-search functionality. These added features can justify a higher price point.

4. Wildcard or Multi-Domain support: If you have multiple subdomains or multiple domains that need to be secured, you might need a wildcard or multi-domain certificate. These types of certificates usually cost more than single-domain certificates.

Here are a few more factors that can contribute to the price differences of SSL certificates:

1. Certificate validity period: The duration for which an SSL certificate remains valid can vary. Some certificates are issued for one year, while others can have a longer validity period, such as two or three years. Certificates with longer validity periods generally come at a higher cost.

2. Additional security features: Some SSL certificates offer advanced security features like vulnerability scanning, malware removal, or DDoS protection. These additional security measures can impact the price of the certificate.

3. Brand recognition and trust seals: Some SSL certificates come with well-known trust seals or badges that can be displayed on your website. These seals indicate that your site is secure, and users can trust it. The reputation and recognition of these trust seals can contribute to the price difference.

4. Support and customer service: Higher-priced SSL certificates often come with better customer support and faster response times. This can be important if you encounter any issues during the installation or management of your certificate.

5. Type of encryption: Another factor that can influence the price is the encryption level offered by the SSL certificate. Different certificates use different encryption algorithms, and higher levels of encryption generally come at a higher cost.

It's important to carefully evaluate your specific needs and priorities when selecting an SSL certificate. Consider the level of validation, brand reputation, additional features, support, and encryption requirements that are essential for your website. By doing thorough research and understanding your requirements, you can choose the right SSL certificate that strikes a balance between price and functionality.

It's my pleasure to advise you on buying SSL Certificate

Mainly you have two option to buy an SSL Certificate

- Buy from Certificate authority like Symantec, GeoTrust, Digicert, Thawte, RapidSSL, Comodo

- Buy from Certificate authority reseller

Why reseller are so affordable compare to CA ?

Reseller are premium customers for certificate authority so authority offer them trusted certificate at big discount price. No matter where your buy from certificate authority or their reseller. You save more money if you choose certificate reseller for same certificate.

EX: RapidSSL Certificate (more affordable certificate for low volume website) at $49 from RapidSSL.com
same certificate buy at just $8 from SSLMatrix
