Here are some elements you should pay attention for, because many designers make the next mistakes :
- rely heavily on Flash - simple HTML sites rank better with search engines and if the use if Flash is a must, then a HTML version of the same page is more than mandatory;
- no internal links, or very few links - internal links are backlinks and they are very important. If there are only a couple of internal links a page, this is a missed chance to get backlinks.
- images, not text for anchors - this is another mistaje many designers make. Anchor text is vital in SEO and when your links lack anchor text, this is bad.
- messy code and tons of code - when the code is messy, it might not be spiderable at all and this can literally exclude your site from search engines because they won't be able to index it.
- Excessive use of JavaScript - the worst with JavaScript is that if not codd properly, it is quite possible that because of the use of JavaScript your pages are not spiderable, which automatiacally means that they won't be indexed.
- overoptimized sites - they could be much worse than under-optimized because when you keyword stuff and use other techniques to artificially inflate the rankings of the site, this could get you banned from search engines and this is the worst that can happen to a site.
Your ideas, our writings -

There are various tools available for checking whether your website is SEO friendly or not. It can check issues of all pages that stop it from performing admirably in search indexes.

Run an SEO audit in your website. Every website seo audit we run includes at least the following items:
1) Technical Audit – making sure your site is well coded and runs fast
2) On-site Audit – full review and analysis of all pages for proper keyword use in all pertinent areas (H1-H6, title tags, content etc.)
3) Off-site Audit – analysis of back links and anchor text and authority and trust
4) Social Audit – review current mentions and visibility
