Specto Design was established in 1999 in New York and incorporated in 2001 by two industry veterans. Leveraging their first hand experience in brand management and web design they contributed to designs for clients such as the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology and Dean Foods's AltaDena Dairy and Berkeley Farms websites.

Early products were cross-platform desktop and client-server applications utilizing 4th Dimension (software), a relational database management system. Most notable product was modelPro, a financial booking tracking application for the fashion industry.
