In simple words, duplicate content refers to substantial blocks of content inside or across domains is either completely match or are significantly similar to other content in the same language. 

Google makes a concerted effort to index and display pages with unique content. This filtering means that if each article on your site has a "normal" and "printer" version, and neither of them is blocked by a no-index tag, they'll list one of them.
