So I was inspired to actually make something useful and ask everyone what they think will get people to keep searching for your site or get returning visitors. Like that thread said, it's obviously great compelling content, but what kind of content is compelling? These are some of my ideas-
-Forms of media (music, movies, games)
-Things related to money and making money online
-Reviews on all sorts of different things
-Software
-Articles (news, sports, etc.)
-Community (forums, message boards, instant messaging)
-Recipes
-Information (high school/college notes)
-Pictures (referring to p0rn)
-Videos (YouTube, anyone)
-Comedy, amusing stuff
Obvious stuff, but helpful if you want broad ideas on what to start a website. What other things do you guys gets people to come back?
Want to add:
- free lottery with prizes
- blogs commenting with backlinks (dofollow).
- weather forecast
You need social networking,add posting,forum,blog comenting
if they impressed with your website services :)

It can be, but i think there are more strategy than that..
I say what really gives a website traffic is its UNIQUE and HELPFUL contents that readers wanting to go back again and again.
In my opinion, content which hooks the audience with loads of information is compelling content.
If you are creating a page about specifications of different cell phone models and your description is saying something else about the page (say, current trends in mobile industry)... It won't be a compelling page for the user.
Make sure what you are publishing should be well researched and well written.
It definitely takes more time, but results will be very good.

In my point of view the best way to get returning visitors is having some useful and interesting contents in your site or blog.However nowadays many site owners give some free stuff like ebooks for getting retuning visitors.You also may sometimes arrange some contest in your site and it will help you to get more repetitive visitors.
Better promote like you already wrote above and create a video that will be viral.
Make it funny or wise or something like this.

I agree with John23. If your conetnt or website is infromative then you will defenitely get visitor back.
If we have provide quality and unique content to our visitor so it is not enough we have to make some updation day by day and try to provide something new every day so then only we can make engage our visitor.
For me unique and informative content, effective web design and good user experience makes visitors keep on coming back to you.
As long as you meet your visitor's needs or expectations, they will surely come back to your site and consider it their major source when it comes to that particular needs.
Every information that is new and useful from user point of views is best to attract users. If your information is correct and unique definitely user will return to your site again and again till the time you will provide god information.
