Pogo-sticking is defined as going back and forth from a search engine results page (SERP) to an individual search result destination site. In other words, pogo-sticking is when the searcher clicks on a link on a SERP, sees that it's not what she is looking for, and immediately bounces off by hitting the back button.

Pogo sticking occurs when a user performs a search, clicks on a result, very quickly clicks back to the search result page, and clicks on a different result. This type of behavior is a direct result of immediate dissatisfaction in the search result, and—unlike bounce rate—pogo sticking is always a bad thing.

Pogo-Sticking is what happens when a user performs a search query, finds a site and clicks on it, then realizes it's not what they want so they click back to the search results.

While pogo-sticking may sound like fun, nobody enjoys clicking three different search results before finding what they were looking for. This type of pogo-sticking occurs when a website ranks highly but fails to satisfy the needs of people using that search term. If this becomes a common occurrence on your landing pages, Google and other search engines will come to the conclusion that your page is ranking for the term erroneously and your rankings will drop. From a search algorithm's point of view, you have no right to that spot in the rankings if people are rarely satisfied by what they find on your webpage.

Pogo-Sticking is what happens when a user performs a search query, finds a site and clicks on it, then realizes it's not what they want so they click back to the search results. This can happen when you focus your efforts on keywords and keyword phrases that are too broad. It's not really the same thing as bounce rate. Pogo-Sticking specifically relates to a search result to a page and back to to the search result where bounce rates show the entrance.

This reminds me of an Eddie Izzard bit about being a crossdresser in the military. The key to warfare is the element of surprise, and what could be more suprising than, in this case, elite soldiers bouncing their way toward your army on pogo sticks?

Pogo-sticking is the scourge of SERPs, where lazy users pogo-stick from your link back to Google faster than a bad algorithm update.
It wrecks your dwell time, spikes bounce rates, and screams "irrelevant content" to the bots, tanking CTR and burying your rankings.
