I think text messaging is very important for local businesses. It helps to promote your business locally and reach out to people directory on their mobile phones to promote your business.

Although I won't call it a game changer but it certainly can bring in qualified leads if targeted properly. I haven't done SMS marketing but I feel if you send SMS to your target audience then the chances of conversion are higher. Lets understand this with a good and a bad example.

1. I receive daily 3-4 SMS's about Life insurance and all related stuff. I am not at all interested in any of those messages whatsoever. So in this case the SMS are blasted to irrelevant people which don't fall in your target audience.

2. Now consider a situation I am preparing for competitive exams and I receive an SMS about Free workshop related to the exam preparation. In this case I am interested in attending the workshop. and their is a chance that if I like the workshop I may end up joining the institution. So that is a successful conversion

SMS Marketing allows you to reach a large number of people all at the same time. Text Messaging is an instant marketing tool, getting your message into the hands of the right audience, when you want it. Customers keep their mobile phones on hand, making it easy to communicate your message to them.

Even though it may seem like stating that SMS marketing has "changed the game" is a bold claim, there is hard data to back it up. For instance, while with even the best email marketing campaign you are lucky to get a 30% open rate, with SMS 90% of messages are opened within 3 minutes of being sent.
