Alexa is a company that measures web traffic on almost every website on the internet through their increasingly popular toolbar plugin. Actually I still thinking about that the importance of Alexa..I mean alexa is a tool used to measure the traffic on a certain site. However,  I still don't consider it as a standard tool. I use Google Analytic instead.

Alexa rank is important because

1. There are lots of customers and advertisers who take Alexa rankings seriously, many "money maker program" still count this to determine how popular is our site. If you want to sell ad space of your website through services like Text-Link-Ads, you need a better Alexa Ranking and Google PR.

2. There are many online shoppers who are still very skeptical of where they are going to shop on the internet. So they usually follow the others and use ratings like Alexa, Google page rank or other traffic ranker's to perceive the value of your site.

As far as I know, alexa rank usually decreases when visitors for the websites increase. This is a positive sign for your sites credibility. This metric is used by advertisers when they want their ad to be posted on your site. Otherwise it has not got that relevance to the sites performace or ranking.

This is a ranking system set by alexa.com (a subsidiary of amazon.com) that basically audits and makes public the frequency of visits on various Web sites. The algorithm according to which Alexa traffic ranking is calculated, is simple.
