Images are quite important to make certain that the content is more approachable, appealing and engaging to the users. It is equally vital from SEO perspective. In order to optimize your images, you need to understand what are the basics of image optimization. A well-optimized image will not only speed up the page loading but also increases user engagement, customer retention and keyword rankings.

Furthermore, an optimized image takes less storage space on the server and hence site backups are completed more promptly.

Below are the steps to optimize your image:

1. Images should be resized - Images that have high resolution slows down the page load time and so you need to cut down the file size without compromising too much on the quality.

2. Right compression rate should be selected – If the image is compressed too much, the quality of the image gets affected. So, use image editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop which automatically compresses the image by taking quality into consideration. Besides Adobe there are many image editing tools such as Pixlr, Gimp, etc.

3. Image file name should be optimized – For ranking in image search results, it is very crucial to use the right file name. We can use relevant and the most informative keywords. This will give a boost to your SEO efforts.

4. Alt tags – User can easily understand what image all is about but that is not the case for search engines. In order to make search engines understand what an image is all about, we need to add alt tags. For better visibility and from SEO point of view, we need to use the brand-related keywords in the alt tags.

Give your images descriptive, informative names – The name of the image should describe the topic of the image.

Use the alt tag – The alt tag should be used to clearly describe the image, keeping in mind the context on the page it is used. Think of how you would describe the image to someone who could not see it and use this description in the alt tag. It should be a brief description.

Define the height or width for your image in your <img> tag – Layout permitting, defining the height or width of your image allows the page to load faster. The browser will know the size of your image and can continue to place content on the page while the image loads. For making images to a correct format you may use image compression tool like Caesium, PNG Optimizer, Riots, PNG Gauntlet 5 Best Offline Image Compression Tools etc..

Page Content – The content on the web page around the image should be relevant to the image, enhancing the topic. Image captions and descriptive titles also help.

Image optimization helps in improving page load speed, boosts websites' SEO ranking, and improves user experience. Page load speed is the amount of time taken by a web page to load completely.
