Hi guys,

Just a quick one.

If I use the H1 tag when optimizing a page, will Google / Yahoo / Bing think that I'm doing something devious if I use CSS to bring the size down?

No, search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing will not think that you are doing something devious if you use CSS to change the size of the H1 tag. However, it is important to note that search engines do consider the content and relevance of your H1 tag, as it is typically used for heading and page title purposes.

The H1 tag is an HTML element that is commonly used to define the main heading or title of a webpage. It carries a higher level of importance compared to other heading tags like H2, H3, etc. Here are some key points about using H1 tags:

1. Page Structure: The H1 tag helps to establish the structure and hierarchy of your webpage. It signifies the primary heading and should describe the main content of the page concisely.

2. SEO Importance: Search engines consider the H1 tag when indexing and ranking webpages. It helps them understand the topic and relevance of your content. Including relevant keywords in your H1 can potentially improve your search engine visibility.

3. Unique and Descriptive: Each webpage should have a unique H1 tag that accurately describes the specific content on that page. Avoid using the same H1 tag across multiple pages, as this can confuse search engines and users.

4. Visual Presentation: While CSS can be used to style the H1 tag, it is generally recommended to use CSS properties like font-size, color, and alignment rather than drastically changing its size. Search engines may consider excessive size reduction as an attempt to manipulate rankings.

5. Accessibility: Ensure that your H1 tag is accessible to assistive technologies used by visually impaired users. It should be properly coded and structured for screen readers to relay the information effectively.

Remember, optimizing your webpage involves more than just the H1 tag. You should focus on providing valuable content, organizing it well, and using relevant heading tags throughout the page to enhance readability and accessibility.

Basically H1 tags won't make or break your page. Every little piece is valuable. Excluding the h1 will not necessarily keep you from receiving top ranking if everything else in your site is tuned correctly. But, since every little bit helps, don't leave it out!

Using the H1 tag for optimizing a page is a standard practice, and it's not considered devious by search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing. However, if you use CSS to reduce the size of the H1 tag excessively, it could be seen as an attempt to manipulate search rankings, which goes against the guidelines of these search engines. It's important to use the H1 tag appropriately to reflect the main content of the page and to ensure that it's consistent with the visual presentation using CSS. This will help search engines properly understand the structure and relevance of your content without raising any red flags.
