How about posting at forums related to my sites subject matter?

If you try for getting the backlinks then press release is not for that. As press release be helpful to promote your site updated information and to make people known about this update but not for the links. And forum and blogs both are the helpful but provide the quality will be helpful to you for better result. And with forum posting the need is be continuous in the discussion and not leave the topic just after submit once.
