I was just wondering if free and/or paid directories work anymore? I have heard that it does and doesn't work. Just wondering if anybody else has a take on it.
Sending emails to random websites asking to put a link on their site seems kind of hard, and doesn't get many responses.
And we almost never do link exchanges.

nope, either could work. as long as you are not being dragged into anything shady.

Ya free direcotories works in the seo. It gives links and links are always useful does not matter they are free or paid links.
Whatever it may be free or paid, link from high PR and niche directories are always helpful.
I also will do free direcotories. it works.

directories are only good for getting your pages indexed and categorized fast but once that is done then dont raelly hlep.
remember links that help you with ranking are the editorial links so look for bloggers and writers who want to talk about you and link to you
Submission on the free directories works but that is not so beneficial comparison to the paid directories as they are with PR.
