A link farm is a group of web pages that all link to every other page in the group. It's designed to raise the rankings of all the sites in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

It is a same nework of sites which are interlinked together to manipulate their ranking in SERP. It is an unethical way and Google severely penalize for link farming.

Link farming is an unfair practice which involves linking to unrelated websites for the purpose of ranking high in search engines.
Search engines such as Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish sites that participate in link farming.
For example- People link their websites with junk directories for the purpose of gaining more backlinks. These links are of no value because they are unrelated to each other.

The process of exchanging reciprocal links with Web sites in order to increase search engine optimization. The idea behind link farming is to increase the number of sites that link to yours because search engines such as Google rank sites according to, among other things, the quality and quantity of sites that link to yours.

Link farming is prohibited by Google but it can be done if a group of websites is relevant to each other. For instance, you have  a group of websites and all share the same idea then you can link them to each other.

Link farm is called as Black hat techniques. I would not like to get back links from any of the black hat techniques. In place of Link farming you may get back links from Forum submission as well as Article Submission.

A link farm is a web page or a set of Web sites with a large list of links to various sites, without groupings, categories, or relationship to the site domain name. Many farm sites linking have no real content on their own or standards for the presentation link. Link farms are disreputable versions of legitimate sites based on links to related topics in order to exchange visitors with some added value content.
