there are many benefits over there . i am mentioning some benefits of link exchange below :

It increases Page Rank of your websites as well as your keyword position in search engine .
If both website are same theme , it also increases Link weight .

I think If you can exchange links related to your niche and have high PR then still it can be an effective technique to get some link popularity.
